14U, 16U, and 18U West Metro Thunder Girls Fastpitch Softball Information

The West Metro Thunder is a softball partnership between Chanhassen and Chaska community softball organizations.  Our goal is to create an opportunity for girls to play competitive fastpitch softball at the A, B, or C levels.  We will form as many teams as possible based on number of interested players.  Our program leverages the strengths of the CYSA and CAA community programs to offer strong offseason training such as pitching lessons, catcher lessons, hitting lessons, skills clinics, winter workouts, and dome teams.

Recent history:
2010. WMT fielded two 16U teams that played in Suburban League B. WMT Blue won MMFL B State and qualified/played at NAFA in Shoreview.
2011. WMT fielded three 16U teams that played in Suburban League A (one team) and B (two teams).  WMT Black qualified for Nationals and played in the NAFA Nationals in Omaha NE.  In 2011 the program was expanded to include 14U teams.  We fielded four 14U teams which also played in the Suburban League.  The top 14U team won their MMFL state tournament and competed in the NAFA Nationals in Omaha NE.
2012. WMT fielded two 16U teams that played in Suburban League A and B.  Both teams qualified for NAFA Nationals.  Three 14U teams were fielded, one A and two B teams which were also part of the Suburban League.
2013.  WMT fielded three 14U teams, one at the A, B, and C levels.  We fielded one 16U A team and one 18U A team.
2014  WMT has rostered three 14U teams and two 16U teams.

Player Eligibility

All players from any community are welcome with the majority of the players expected to come from the 2 community areas.

Coach Selection
The West Metro Thunder has paid head coaches for 18U, 16U, and 14U teams.  Parent volunteers are asst coaches.

Team Formation/Tryouts

Tryouts are held in Aug.  Team roster selection is determined by the tryout results and coach assessment reports from the prior season.  Coaches are selected by the West Metro Thunder committee of CAA and CYSA leaders.  The teams at 18U, 16U, and 14U have paid head coaches and volunteer parent asst coaches and volunteer team managers.

14U.  Team level is set at different levels (A, B, C) depending on the overall team competitive level.  Individuals are rostered to teams based on ability as demonstrated during the tryouts and previous-year coach evaluation.  Teams bat their entire roster and have overall equal playing time.  Players will typically play 2-3 positions throughout the season.  Week-day games are focused on player development versus a "must win" mentality.  Tournaments are more competitive and coaches will often reduce player rotation. Teams have 2-3 events per week, a combination of practices and games.  Teams primarily play their league games Mon-Thur.  Teams participate in weekend tournaments: three tournaments, Suburban League tournament, MMFL State, and National Tournament (ASA, USSSA, or NAFA) (if it qualifies).

Team Association Hosting for 2015

CAA is going to do the admin hosting work for WMT.  This "admin hosting" work includes providing practice & game fields, game umpires, tournament registration, league registration, and team equipment.  CAA and CYSA WMT Directors work together to operate the program.

CAA and CYSA have worked together to establish the team rosters, team coaches, etc.

West Metro Thunder players can consider themselves members of both associations and can participate in workouts, clinics, lessons, and other player actives with either association.
